Veo 3.1 is Google's flagship video model. Veo 3.1 Fast is the same family at a lower price and a quicker turnaround. Most comparisons stop there, which leaves the question people actually have unanswered: is Fast good enough to ship, or is it only for drafts?

This post reads both models off Treza's video model catalog as of September 2026 and compares what each one accepts and what each one charges. The short answer is that the two models accept exactly the same inputs, so the decision is never about capability. It is about price and polish, and the price gap is not the same at every setting.

The short version

  • Veo 3.1 Fast takes the same 4, 6 or 8 second clips, the same 16:9 and 9:16 ratios, the same first and last frame keyframes and the same 720p, 1080p and 4K output as Veo 3.1. With audio on at standard resolution it costs $0.12 per second against $0.40, which is 70 percent less.
  • Veo 3.1 is the finishing model. Its own model page says the difference is fine detail and consistency, and that for feeds and drafts the difference rarely matters. When the shot is the deliverable, render it here.

Because the input grid is identical, a prompt that drafts well on Fast re-renders on Veo 3.1 without changing a single setting. That is the whole reason to use them together.

Every capability row matches. In the Seedance family the cheap model and the flagship do different things. In the Veo family the cheap model does everything the flagship does, so the only reason to pay more per second is the picture.

The price gap depends on the setting

Veo 3.1 publishes four per-second rates: audio on or off, standard resolution or 4K. Fast publishes six, because it also splits standard resolution into a 720p rate and a 1080p rate. Laid side by side:

The gap is widest in the configuration most people render in: audio on, standard resolution. Turn audio off and the saving drops to half, because Veo 3.1's silent rate is already half its audio rate while Fast's silent rate is only a little below its audio rate. Go to 4K and the saving drops again.

So the common advice to "turn audio off to save money" is true on Veo 3.1 and much less true on Fast. On Veo 3.1, audio off halves the bill. On Fast at 1080p, audio off takes it from $0.12 to $0.10 per second, a 17 percent saving on a rate that was already low. If you are drafting on Fast, leave audio on and hear the room tone. It is part of what you are evaluating.

Five framings of one shot at 8 seconds with audio is $16 on Veo 3.1 and $4.80 on Fast at 1080p, or $4.00 at 720p. Render all five on Fast, pick the winner, and re-render that one on Veo 3.1 for $3.20. The whole exploration plus the finished shot comes to about $8, half the cost of exploring on the flagship alone.

All of these are the provider's published per-second rates as read off the catalog. On Treza the credit gate reserves at the worst-case SKU for each model before a run starts, $0.60 per second for Veo 3.1 and $0.30 for Fast, which is why the estimate you see on the canvas is above the rate for the setting you picked. Same keyframes, same bookends

Both models accept a first frame image and a last frame image and generate the motion between them. That matters more in a two-model workflow than it sounds. A product reveal that has to open on an exact hero shot and land on an exact logo card can be drafted on Fast with the real bookends in place, not stand-ins, so what you are evaluating on the cheap model is the actual shot. When the keeper goes to Veo 3.1, the same two images go with it.

Neither model accepts the multi-image reference input that some models use to keep a character or product recognizable across separate generations. If that is what you need, Seedance 2.0, Seedance 1.5 Pro and a few others in the catalog take references, and Veo does not. Where our own templates land

The Talking Head Short renders an 8 second clip on Fast with audio off, because the voice comes from a text to speech node and a Lipsync pass afterward, so paying for native audio would be paying for a track that gets replaced.

That is a judgment about where a vertical Short is watched, not about which model is better. Nothing in a phone feed shows the difference at 720p, and defaulting to the flagship would quadruple the video line of every run for polish the destination cannot display. When someone builds a 16:9 hero placement from one of those templates, switching the node to Veo 3.1 is one dropdown, and the AI video pipeline around it, the script, the narration, the captions and the publish step, does not change.

Is Fast good enough?

For a vertical Short, a social feed, a draft, or a batch of variants, yes. That is the position on the Veo 3.1 Fast model page and it is how our own templates are configured.

For a hero placement, a paid spot, anything shown on a desktop screen or at 4K, render the final on Veo 3.1. The model page describes what Fast gives up as fine detail and consistency, and those are exactly the qualities a large screen exposes.

How to use both

The pattern our own pipelines follow:

  1. Draft on Veo 3.1 Fast at 720p with audio on. At $0.10 per second, five prompt variants of an 8 second shot is $4.
  2. Look at the outputs. Kill the framings that do not work. The flagship never sees a prompt you have not already watched.
  3. If the destination is a vertical feed, stop. Ship the Fast clip.
  4. If the destination shows the asset large, re-render the keeper on Veo 3.1 at the same duration, ratio and bookends. Nothing about the prompt changes.
